In early 2025, we ran something new as part of our Youth Programme: Creative Creatures, a weekly youth club for children aged 7–11 in Stannington.
Over eight sessions, the children got stuck into something different each week; clay sculpture, monoprinting, drama games, poetry, collage, portrait-making… the list goes on! Alongside the artwork, it was a space to build confidence, grow connections, and let young voices be heard.
Together, we explored how the children felt about their local area, what makes a community child-friendly, and what the children would do differently if they were in charge. Their ideas were brilliant, bold, and often very funny! At the end of the project, we celebrated everything they’d created with an exhibition and a certificate ceremony.
The group was full from the first session, with a waiting list in place for the duration of the project. The children told us they felt safe, happy, and excited to come each week. One said, “Normally when I finish school, I just want to go home but when I get here, I love it!” Another said, “I felt happy and safe in the club. The reason why is because nobody will judge you.”
Parents and carers noticed changes too. Many said their children had grown in confidence, become more creative, and felt more connected to where they live. One parent told us, “He’s gained confidence and met lots of new friends.” Another said, “My kids now like to get the arts and crafts out when they need to regulate.”
