Papercrafts with Edge of the Universe

Edge of the Universe’s Papercraft series of workshops offers a hands-on introduction to different ways of working artistically with paper including printing, pattern-making, collage, zine-making and bookbinding! These sessions are for age 16+ and all materials are provided. See below for a breakdown of what to expect each week:

31 October (Week One): Screen Printing

Screen printing is a fun and easy way to make posters and prints using a stencil and a mesh screen. Bring along any ideas you already have for posters or just come with an open mind and experiment!

7 November (Week Two): Paper marbling and stencilling/ mark making

Paper marbling involves dropping colourful inks into a tray of water, where it swirls and makes beautiful patterns; paper is then submerged in the water and absorbs these, giving a lovely marbled effect. Marbled paper can be used in a range of ways, including as endpapers for books! We’ll also use stencils and mark making to add other kinds of patterns to paper. If you would like to, you can use the patterned sheets in the zine making or bookbinding workshops.

14 November (Week Three): Zine making and collage

Zines (short for magazines) are the ultimate DIY artistic projects! Zine making originated with fan-zines about music, but you can make a zine about anything: a walk you went on, your favourite film star, food/recipes, yourself… the possibilities are endless. We will guide you through some of the different formats they can take and help you with idea creation and image collaging.

21 November (Week Four): Bookbinding

Books are lovely, and books you have made yourself are even lovelier! We will guide you through cutting paper to size, using decorative endpapers, making book covers, and using thread to bind everything together. Together we’ll make a notebook that would make a perfect gift for someone – or you can just keep it for yourself!
