RivelinCo are looking to commission an artist-facilitator to work alongside volunteers and local people to launch a new and exciting community fridge project for Hillsborough, located in Winn Gardens (S6 1UJ).
The selected artist-facilitator will co-produce the launch of the project, as well as lead a series of creative workshops that engage residents to volunteer at, donate to, and/or use the new community fridge – encouraging learning about food waste and surplus food as well as spreading awareness of the benefits of growing your own food and cooking. Initially the community fridge will be open once a month, and we hope this will become more regular later in the year.
The fridge will be located at Winn Gardens, alongside the S6 Food Bank in the same location. Though Food Bank users are of course very welcome to use the community fridge, it should be noted that the fridge is for everybody – it is about reducing and preventing food waste as much as it is about providing free access to food.
The project is led by RivelinCo in collaboration with Winn Gardens, and funded by Hubbub with support from Coop.
Who We’re Looking For:
- An enthusiastic and socially engaged artist-facilitator, with a positive attitude and experience delivering workshops for a range of ages and working with people from all walks of life
- Somebody with an interest in food, growing, cooking, and particularly the environmental and social impact of food waste
- A proactive leader, who is interested in steering the community fridge project as a whole
- Somebody with a varied or multifaceted practice – unafraid to introduce elements of cooking or gardening in workshops alongside arts and crafts, movement, or something else
- Somebody who genuinely enjoys getting to know people and learning about their stories, and who understands the challenges and determination required when working with a community to start a project from scratch
Budget, Fees and Timeline:
The fee is £1600, which should cover approximately 8 days’ work at £200 per day, or can be split into half days if necessary. The fee is inclusive of planning/meetings. We may be able to extend the contract once the project has launched, pending further funding.
In addition to the fee, up to £250 is available for workshop materials. A small access budget can also be made available if required – please contact linda@rivelinco.org before you apply if you’d like to discuss this in more detail.
We are flexible about the time period this needs to cover, but your work on the project must include planning and recruitment (volunteers/participants), the workshops, and at least two of the days the community fridge is open (initially we aim to open once a month, days and times TBC in discussion with the selected artist and the team at Winn Gardens). The first open day should be planned as a larger scale launch event for the fridge, so may include additional activities.
Please note that recruitment for this kind of venture is not often as simple as putting a call-out online and will likely require more proactive forms of recruitment such as being physically present in the community, helping with the food bank, flyering, or something else. RivelinCo can support marketing and recruitment but ideas will be led by the selected artist.
Your Proposal:
To apply, please create a short proposal in any format you like – no longer than one side of A4 for documents, or 5mins in length for video or audio – to explain your ideas for the project and workshops. We are open to all sorts of different ideas as long as they include the specific events and elements mentioned above.
Please include the following:
- Your name and contact information
- An outline of your ideas for the project
- Any practical considerations: what space you need, how you will recruit participants/volunteers, how you will market the launch and opening days for the fridge
- An approximate timeline and budget for the project, including what activities the fee will cover and any materials etc needed
RivelinCo can provide producing, marketing and evaluation support in-kind, as well as support staff for larger activities/events. Winn Gardens can provide indoor or outdoor space for activities/events, and the indoor space also has access to a kitchen at certain times of day.
Please send your proposal to recruitment@rivelinco.org by 5pm on Friday 2 September.
About RivelinCo:
RivelinCo is a neighbourhood arts centre without walls, based in Hillsborough, Sheffield. We make and curate arts activities and carry out civic and community work, just like a building-based arts centre, except our programme takes place in parks, supermarkets, community centres, high streets, car parks, empty shops, libraries, schools, and care homes – temporarily transforming them into theatres, cinemas, galleries, workshops, classrooms and forums. We create and curate exciting shows, projects and events in unexpected places, and we lead creative workshops that bring together people of all ages and walks of life to learn new skills. We regularly collaborate creatively with local people, artists, businesses, and community organisations, and we believe access to culture is a human right, and our definition of culture is broad: our remit includes gardening, cooking, crafts, cinema, languages and sports as often as it includes theatre, dance, music and visual arts. www.rivelinco.org
